Blacking Out

Sometimes it’s done artfully to the edges and looks like the person is wearing a wetsuit, other times it’s scrawled or scribbled carelessly leaving the orginal visible beneath the marker pen (defeating the object). Even though I was warned during an induction on arrival, it was still shocking to see the blacked out figures in a shop when I was looking for a multiplug adaptor the other night. Part of the shock is visual - wobbly black demons lurking in jovial family scenes - and part of it is the realisation that people are actually employed to sit and do this to every female image on every item or goods on sale. The commitment employed in blocking these smiling images from the shelves is what’s most unnerving. Black out!

I approve of this blackout, I’m with the locals on this one.
